What is Mohs surgery?
Mohs micrographic surgery is a specialized skin cancer treatment that has a very high level of precision. In many cases, Mohs surgery is capable of curing patients of skin cancers that have returned after other treatments have failed. Mohs surgery targets and removes any malignant/cancerous cells from the body while sparing as much healthy tissue as possible.
Who Is a Candidate for Mohs Surgery for Skin Cancer Treatment?
Mohs surgery may be recommended to treat those who have skin cancer in addition to one or more of the following:
- High risk for recurring cancer
- Large area of cancerous tissue
- Aggressive cancer
- Difficult-to-define borders of the cancer
- Cancer is one of the following sensitive areas:
- Eyes
- Nose
- Mouth
- Ears
- Hands
- Feet
- Genitalia
What does the Mohs procedure involve?
Mohs skin cancer surgery may be recommended for a patient after a full skin cancer exam at Keys Dermatology detects skin cancer.
During the Mohs procedure, a Mohs-certified doctor will only remove a small amount of skin tissue, leaving behind as much of your healthy skin cells as possible. However, because it is difficult to predict how much cancerous tissue is present in your skin, the procedure requires removing multiple thin layers of skin tissue, one at a time.
Once the first very thin layer of tissue has been removed, we will microscopically examine the sample, repeating the process until no cancerous cells are detected.
Is Mohs Surgery Painful?
The procedure is generally performed on an outpatient basis, involving minimal anesthesia and causing little discomfort for patients.
