Cryosurgery Treatment in Key West

What is Cryosurgery Treatment?

Cryosurgery is a procedure that treats cancerous or precancerous skin lesions by freezing the cells. This skin cancer treatment targets and destroys the abnormal cells using liquid nitrogen, which causes the cells to die. The procedure causes minimal discomfort and is highly successful in treating precancerous and cancerous tissues found on the skin. Our providers have years of experience working with patients with precancerous lesions or skin cancer and has the knowledge and expertise to perform cryosurgery with high success rates.

Why is Cryosurgery Performed?

At Keys Dermatology, we may recommend cryosurgery skin treatment to patients who have been diagnosed with cancerous or precancerous tissues found anywhere on and beneath the skin’s surface. This includes both precancerous and cancerous skin lesions but is more commonly performed on precancerous growths like actinic keratoses.

We most commonly perform cryosurgery when a patient:

  • Has never had a cancer lesion in this area before
  • Has multiple skin cancers
  • Has opted out of other cancer removal procedures
  • Cannot undergo another type of surgery due to a bleeding disorder

What is the Procedure Process for Cryotherapy?

In most cases, diagnostic procedures, including a complete skin cancer exam, are performed to determine whether abnormal cells are present. After this, we may recommend cryosurgery treatment if it is a good fit for your needs.

Cryosurgery is done during a short office visit and usually causes very little discomfort. Before the cryosurgery procedure, we may recommend taking pain medication to alleviate any discomfort during the procedure.

During cryosurgery treatment, you’ll be comfortably positioned so your skin doctor has access to the affected area of your body. Then, liquid nitrogen is applied to freeze and destroy the abnormal cells. The liquid nitrogen is usually applied using either an aerosol spray or a cotton applicator stick.

Is Cryotherapy Safe?

The procedure is completely safe, it is alright to repeat the procedure as needed. Often, it may take a few applications before the cells in the area are completely destroyed; however, this will vary depending on the size of the affected area. After, we will likely apply an antibiotic dressing to your skin to help the area heal and will walk you through any next steps for your recovery.
