Am I Too Old for BOTOX Cosmetic?

Botox is an injectable treatment that has been used for years as an anti-aging treatment. At Keys Dermatology, we have provided this cosmetic service for our patients to address “dynamic” wrinkles and folds on the face caused by muscle contractions. However, we have many patients who come into our practice asking if they are the right age for Botox injections, and if they are good candidates. Our doctors in Key West and Islamorado, FL, have found that Botox injections work well for patients not only in middle adulthood, but also in their 50s, 60s, and beyond!

Understanding Botox injections

Botox is an injectable known as a neuromodulator. This medication is formulated with an ingredient known as botulinum toxin type A. It is a paralytic agent, meaning that it can reduce muscle contractions when injected into specific muscles of the body. It has been used for years in treating migraine headaches, bruxism (teeth grinding), excessive sweating, muscle spasms, and overactive bladder. It also has a cosmetic purpose, as it can reduce the appearance of wrinkles and folds caused by muscle contractions of the face. With Botox injections, patients can address imperfections around the upper third of the face, reducing the appearance of crow’s feet, glabellar lines, and forehead folds.

Am I too old for Botox cosmetic injectables?

It's unlikely that you are too old for Botox. The injections are non-surgical, so you can avoid the risks associated with a procedure. Botox works by the same mechanism in your 60s+ as it would have in your 30s, which means it continues to work well for expression lines. If the lines are severe and deep, there may be another option that will work better for your skin.

It is possible that - as you grow older - you will experience deep folds and creases. These lines may or may not be best addressed with Botox. The key is to consult an experienced practitioner who understands the cause of your wrinkles and the most effective way to treat those lines. Sometimes the answer is an injectable like BOTOX, or some other treatment, or a combination of treatments. Rely on us to describe all of those options.
